We're delighted to offer a structured residential voluntary experience at Jonai Farms & Meatsmiths. After many successful experiences with a diverse range of WWOOFers, we now offer those interested in a farming future a serious opportunity to work with us and learn our entire ethically-viable no-growth/degrowth model.
3-month volunteer residency
Autumn - 1 Mar - 31 May
Winter - 1 Jun - 31 Aug
Spring - 1 Sep - 30 Nov
Short residencies available for the right candidates
According to the UN, small-scale agroecological farming can, does and must feed the world if we want a world to live in, and you can be part of the revolution. At Jonai Farms we take our ecological and ethical responsibilities seriously, and we're keen to share our skills and knowledge to help grow the food sovereignty movement in Australia and globally. If you're committed to a life working in ecological, ethical agriculture, this is the place for you.
You'll learn everything about ethical animal husbandry for a small herd of pastured pigs and cattle, including rotational grazing and waste-stream feed management for the pigs. You'll experience firsthand what supply-chain control really means as Tammi teaches you to butcher both pork and beef in our on-farm boning room, as well as learning a range of techniques and recipes for making smallgoods, salumi, and charcuterie in our commercial kitchen and curing room. You'll also help run workshops on butchery, curing, sausage and salami making, and learn the skills to cater for medium to large groups. And of course you'll learn our direct sales model - a combination of our risk & reward sharing community-supported agriculture (CSA) system and farm gate sales.
From building fences and pig houses to keeping good herd records, doing seam butchery, and running a profit and loss report - join us and develop the skills to support your passion for growing fair food.
Accommodation is in a converted shipping container with fabulous views and a composting toilet. All meals are taken with the family and whoever else happens to be with us on any given day. You won't have much time for internet, but we have NBN wireless available in the house. Work is five days per week and rotating chores on weekends.
We are looking for singles or couples where both are committed to regenerative, ethical agriculture. Given how under-represented women are in farming and the meat industry, priority is given to providing opportunities for women.
Fill out the volunteer questionnaire no later than six weeks before the residency commences.
We’ll read all questionnaires and contact everyone at least four weeks before the residency commences.
We then schedule an interview.
The successful applicant(s) join the Jonai team!
